Why is it sometimes easier to ask someone to pray for our sickness than to tell them about the things we're struggling with inside?

Healed, Forgiven, and Free looks at James 5:13–20 and what Christian community is supposed to look like when we move beyond simply sitting beside one another in church and begin trusting one another with the difficult parts of life. vitalwords.org

The message begins by remembering the fear and uncertainty surrounding September 11, 2001—and the remarkable way people came together afterward. Churches filled as people looked for hope, connection, and something greater than themselves. But as time passed, much of that unity faded. vitalwords.org

That raises an important question for the Church today: Are we really living in community, or are we simply sitting in the same room?

James tells Christians to pray when they're suffering, praise God when they're joyful, call others to pray when they're sick, and confess their sins to one another. The article challenges us to stop hiding the last parts of ourselves that we're afraid to let anyone see. Not by telling everyone everything, but by having trusted Christians in our lives who will listen, love us, pray with us, and help us walk forward. vitalwords.org

  • Why do you think it can be so difficult for Christians to admit when they're struggling?
  • Do our churches provide places where people can be honest without fearing gossip or judgment?
  • What does “confess your sins to each other and pray for each other” look like in practice?
  • How do we know who is trustworthy enough to share our struggles with?
  • Have we become too individualistic about our faith?
  • What can churches do to help people move from simply attending together to actually knowing and supporting one another?

One of the central thoughts from the message is simple:

“You can’t heal what you won’t reveal.” vitalwords.org

That doesn't mean everyone needs to know your private struggles. But perhaps somebody should.

Do you have people in your Christian life with whom you can be completely honest and simply say, “I need you to pray with me”?
